[edit] Geography

Nickelsdorf is the only village in the community. It has an important border crossing to Hegyeshalom (german Straß-Sommerein) in Hungary.

[edit] History

The village belonged - like the whole province of Burgenland - to Hungary (German-Western-Hungary) until 1920/1921. Since 1898 when the politics announced the Magyarisierungsprozess, wanting every community to use its Hungarian name which has been Mikloshalma in Nickelsdorf's case. After the World War I, tough negotiations resulted in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1918. Those treaties have redrawn Austria and Hungary's borders and German-Western-Hungary has been part of Austria from that time on. The village belongs to the recently founded province of Burgenland since 1921. (for detailed information also examine the History of Burgenland)

[edit] Festivals

Since 1985, the annual and internationally famous Jazzfestival Konfrontationen has taken place in Nickelsdorf.

From June 9th to June 12th 2005, the Nova Rock Festival took place in Nickelsdorf with headliners like Die Ärzte, System of a Down, The Prodigy and Green Day. Every day, there were 30,000 fans in this small village next to the border to Hungary.

And one year later in 2006, the Nova Rock Festival drew, with over 50 bands, no less than 150,000 visitors. With famous bands like Metallica and Guns n' Roses, it was the largest ever rock festival in Austria.
