Nickel(II) oxide is the chemical compound with the formula NiO. This species adopts the NaCl structure, with octahedral Ni(II) and O2- sites. It is formed by the pyrolysis of a variety of nickel(II) compounds such as Ni(OH)2, Ni(NO3)2, and NiCO3. Like many other binary metal oxides, NiO is often nonstoichiometric, meaning that the Ni:O ratio deviates from 1:1.
Other nickel oxides are Ni2O3 and NiCO2.
