Nick Sweepah & Aux One

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nick Sweepah & Aux One is an Australian hip hop group made of members Nick Sweepah - MC (vocalist), and Aux One - producer/beatmaker. They are part of the illustrious "Awakenings Crew" - a group formed in 2003 to promote and release styles of hiphop that were under-represented in the scene.

Both Nick and Aux have worked alongside other Melbourne hiphop groups, including Puah Hedz and Crixus. In fact they met each other through mutual friend Muphin (then of Puah Hedz, now of Muph & Plutonic, on Obese Records), and began collaborating on songs that would eventually form their debut, self-titled, EP.

The EP was released in 2005, independently funded, and distributed by Inertia Recordings. It consists of 10 tracks. 5 of these feature raps from Nick Sweepah, and the others are interludes or instrumentals, produced - like the rest of the EP - by Aux One.

Aux One produces beats by sampling, and has been compared to the likes of Madlib, Dilla, and MF DOOM. Nick Sweepah's lyrics are delivered in a traditional style, but generally contain references to writers, films, artists, etc., that are more counterculture or have a cult following. This includes; writers and thinkers such as Bill Hicks, Hunter S. Thompson, H. P. Lovecraft and the Cthulu mythos, pop culture figures like Rob Zombie and The Simpsons, amongst plenty of less specific references to various aspects of the occult.

They have not released anything since this EP in 2005, but occasionally perform live around Melbourne - usually alongside Awakenings affiliates - most commonly Melbourne MC Ivens.
