[edit] Biography

[edit] Early life

Carter was born in Jamestown, New York[2] to Bob and Jane Carter. According to Carter, he has Blackfoot Native American, as well as possibly Spanish, ancestry.[3][4] His siblings include Angel, Leslie, Bobbie Jean, and singer Aaron. He also has an older half-sister named Ginger from his father's first marriage, a step-sister named Taelyn and a half-brother, Kanden, from his father's new wife.

At the time of his birth, his parents were running a night club in Westfield, New York; several years later, they moved to Tampa, Florida and managed a retirement home where they added his younger siblings to their family. [5] Carter began auditioning for acting roles in the early 1990s, and appeared in an unbilled role in the film Edward Scissorhands (1990). It is said that in several auditions, Nick met AJ Mc Lean and Howie Dorough and they became friends. Later, they formed a mini-vocal group and started seeking a manager. As they found him, Lou Pearlman, he thought it most appropriate to seek for a fourth member. This was the chance for Kevin Richardson, who brought his cousin Brian with him. At the beginning, there was no success in the United States, even though the first single "We've Got It Goin' On" had been a hit on Orlando radio stations. Lou then marketed the Backstreet Boys in Europe, where they became commercially successful in 1996. To date, Carter has helped the group sell over 80 million albums.

[edit] Career: 1990s

The Backstreet Boys became hugely popular in Europe and the U.S in the late 1990s, and Carter gained fame, becoming known as the "heartthrob" of the group. He is the youngest, joining the group at twelve years old. On tour, he played drums and guitar. Carter has become a prominent lead singer in the group, though all five members sing lead on each album.

In 1999, he was ranked #1 on the list of "Hottest Under 21" byTeen Scene Magazine and was named "The Biggest Teen Idol" by Teen People magazine. He was also named one of People magazines "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in 2000. Carter's fame has helped create the career of his brother Aaron, who has toured with Wil Heuser and KC and the Sunshine Band.

[edit] Career: 2000s

Carter attempted a career as a solo singer in 2002, when he released a pop-rock solo album titled Now or Never. The album reached #17 on Billboard 200 and was certified gold. That same year, Carter was named "The Sexiest Man in the World" in a CosmoGirl Magazine poll conducted by its readers. Carter has also returned to his acting career. He appeared opposite Kevin Zegers in the 2004 horror film, The Hollow, and was slated to star in another horror film, Brew, but that project has since fallen through.

Carter then went back on tour with the Backstreet Boys, who were promoting the album Never Gone which debuted at #3 in the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. "Never Gone" helped the group break the 80 million mark for albums sold worldwide. In fall 2005, they toured Europe.

Carter and his siblings star in a reality television show, House of Carters, which premiered in October 2006 on E!. The series features all five Carter siblings reuniting to live in the same house, as well as feature in-depth moments of their ups and downs of living.[6]

Carter has revealed on numerous interviews that he has intentions to release a second solo album in the near future, but not before his Backstreet Boys commitments.

[edit] Personal life

Carter has been linked to many female pop superstars, including Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson and her younger sister, Ashlee Simpson, and others, though most are unsubstantiated. On the Howard Stern show, it was revealed that he lost his virginity at the age of 15 to Debra Lafave when they were classmates. In the past, Carter had a relationship with Willa Ford, which ended after reports of possessiveness and jealousy on her part. In 2002, he dated a Swedish model named Izabelle Filling. He was then linked with celebrity hotel heiress and Hollywood starlet Paris Hilton, and by late 2003, the two were publicly dating. The relationship ended in July 2004: he then covered his Paris Hilton tribute tattoo with a skull and crossbones design that says "Old habits die hard." In 2005, it was rumored that he was engaged to a Chinese entertainer Bai Ling, but he denied the rumor. In early 2006, Carter dated Australian model Claire Grieve [7], after meeting her at a Backstreet Boys concert at the Rod Laver Arena. Carter makes trips to Las Vegas on a regular basis where he is often seen with his close friend Jake.

Carter's parents were divorced in 2003 and his father remarried Ginger Elrod on April 1, 2004. In June 7, 2005, Carter welcomed the birth of his half-brother, Kanden Brent Carter, from his father's new marriage; he also has a younger step-sister named Taelyn by his father's new wife. His mother remarried a Mr. Holcomb on November 2, 2005.
