Nibe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nibe is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. It is located in a geographic region known as Himmerland. The municipality covers an area of 185 km², and has a total population of 8,283 (2005). Its mayor is Jens Østergaard Madsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and site of its municipal council is the town of Nibe.

Neighboring municipalities are Støvring to the southeast, Aalborg to the northeast, Aabybro, Brovst, and Fjerritslev to the north, Løgstør to the west, and Aars to the south.

Because Nibe municipality is located on the south shores of the Limfjorden, the waterway that separates the main body of the Jutland peninsula from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy, its northern municipal neighbors, which are all located on Vendsyssel-Thy, are separated from Nibe by water. The waters in this area are called Agger Strait (Agger Sund) and Gjøl Bredning.

The municipality includes several islands lying off its north coast— Klosterholm, Vår Holm, Kyø Holm, and Hornsgård Holm.

By January 1, 2007 Nibe municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Hals, Sejlflod and Aalborg municipalities to form the new Aalborg municipality.
