Niçard

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Niçard (Niçard - Nissart) (native name) or Niçois (French name) is a distinct subdialect of the Provençal dialect of the Occitan language, spoken in the city of Nice (Niça/Nissa in Niçard) and in the historical County of Nice which is the main part of the current French département of Alpes-Maritimes located at the east of the Var river. Niçard is also traditionally spoken in Monaco, besides Monégasque.

However, most people of Nice and its region do not speak Niçard and those who do are exclusively bilingual in French. Even so, the local television news is presented in Niçard (with French subtitles) and all the street signs in the old town of Nice are still written in this dialect. Lately there has been a revival in the use of Niçard and it is popularly studied at the University of Nice. The Niçard song "Nissa La Bella" is often regarded as the "national anthem" of Nice.
