NHS Highland

NHS Highland is one of the fourteen regions of the Scottish National Health Service. Geographically, it is the largest Health Board, covering an area of 32,500 km2 from Kintyre in the south-west to Caithness in the north-east, serving a population of 300,000 people. It employs over 9,000 people, making it one of the largest employers in the region.

[edit] Amalgamation
On April 1, 2006, NHS Highland took over responsibility for the part of the former NHS Argyll and Clyde region, the other part of which was transferred to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

NHS Highland is comprised of one specialist services unit and four Community Health Partnerships:
- North Highland — based in Wick
- Mid Highland — based in Invergordon
- South and East Highland — based in Inverness
- Argyll and Bute — based in Oban and Lochgilphead

NHS Highland is responsible for five district general hospitals
- Raigmore Hospital, Inverness
- Caithness General Hospital, Wick
- Belford Hospital, Fort William
- Lorn and Islands Hospital, Oban
- Dunoon General Hospital
The Mackinnon Memorial Hospital in Broadford on Skye is a community hospital staffed by rural practitioners and serves Skye and Lochalsh.
