Template talk:NHL Team Infobox

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Info Important note: Currently, this template has not been officially sanctioned by Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey. As a result, it is not used on all National Hockey League team articles, and has even been reverted or removed on a couple of them. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 00:20, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Check out my new infobox

I put it up specially for the Devils team page. Any suggestions would be helpful. --Sportskido8 17:37 EST, 23 August 2006

[edit] Just some thoughts

So someone created a template, {{NHL Team Infobox}}, out of the team infobox tables, thats great except one problem. The problem being that of the alt logo. Their are six teams, (NHL), that either do not have an alt logo, are missing the alt logo, or (as in the case of Philadelphia) have an alt logo that is basically ssimilar to the standard logo. Basically with those teams you have a funny looking off center logo, with a white space next to it where a alt logo should go, it just looks strange, to me. This can be fixed, and i have no problem with fixing it, it would keep the look the same or the best i can, but in teams that don't have an alt logo, it would move the standard logo to the center. I was also thinking that other minor changes could be made so that this could be less an NHL only box to an all league box, being that the boxes for the minor league teams are similar to the ones used on the NHL pages. I figure i just get the idea of the project before going ahead, if no one objects then I'll push forward in the next couple of days or so. This part of the message will be cross posted to the project discussion.--Boothy443 | trácht ar 08:11, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Fine by me. I knew it looked strange when I created it, but I didn't know how to fix it and I figured someone would come along sooner or later to do so. Feel free to fix it. As for using it on the minor league pages, you could just replace "Minor-league affiliate" with "Affiliation" or something similar, and it would work; as it is, it's probably redundant to have "minor-league affiliate" and list the league as well, since it's a given what level we're dealing with. What about Stanley Cup championships and playoff appearances? Would that be too much to add? Floydspinky71 01:44, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Yes; that's a long box as it is. RGTraynor 16:24, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possible changes to Infobox

Just curious what the thoughts were with respect to changing the infobox to look similar to the NFL infoboxes. Granted, they are long, but they encompass a lot of information, information that's often duplicated with the "Facts" subsection or within the article itself. I think an infobox should be a summation of all the information on a team; the NFL's infoboxes do that without clogging up too much of the article. If there's a large consensus that the NFL one sucks and shouldn't be used for hockey, I understand; I'm just bringing it up as a possible change. Anthony Hit me up... 23:29, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I definitely think there should be changes (the text is way too big). I think the NFL infobox is a bit of overkill, but is definitely a step in the right direction. gurulegend 05:35, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possible overhaul to Infobox

Well, the thread in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey discussion page was getting pretty big, so I thought I would mention this on the actual template discussion page itself. After a lot of studying other league's templates, how we could possibly enhance our own template, and what could be taken away and added to the template, I came up with this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Resident_Lune/Sandbox - There are two examples here. One for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and one for the Detroit Red Wings.

The template I made actually was from taking a bunch of different league templates and making them in to one template that seemed legitimate. For example, I kept the alternating box colors that the NHL template originally had. I moved the alignment of text in the boxes to the left, much like the NFL template. The infobox itself was sized down and font was shrunk much like the NBA box, and black lines were added between sections.

Beyond the aethstetic issues, I removed and added several sections. I removed Captains, Alternate Captains, the image of the Alternate Logo, and changed Home Arena to Arena, and Based in to City. I felt that removing the Captain and Alternate Captain sections was worthwhile, and to make up for it, something could be done in the roster of each page to emphasize who the C and A members are. The alternate logo, while important to some teams, simply added too much bulk. I sized down the main logo, and removed the alternate. I felt that the alternate logo could go somewhere else on the actual team article.

As for what was added ... I added Division and Conference, as I felt those were very important (and all other major league templates use that as well). I then added Local Media Affiliates. Several team articles have begun to add links and information concerning the television and radio affiliates that cover a team, and I thought that would fit well in an infobox, similar to how the NFL touches on the radio affiliates. Lastly, I added Titles (the name can be changed if someone feels something else would work better). I'm under the impression that an older version of this current template actually had that section, but that it was removed. Well, I felt that with the new left text alignment and smaller text size, it could once again work in the infobox. If you look at my second box example at the bottom using the title-heavy Detroit Red Wings, you can see that title seasons all line up perfectly atop each other.

I would really love any feedback that can be given concerning this. As it shows at the top of this article, this current template isn't "official" or has been sanctioned by the project team. But I really do feel that the overhaul I've done could put this template on the fast track to possibly becoming official, since it is both aethstatically appealing, and at the same time made to store plenty of vital team information in each box.--Resident Lune 23:35, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

I like the new design, especailly with some of the extraneous information removed. I do have a few suggestions, though. For conference and division, I think it would look better to say Western or Eastern instead of Western Conference or Eastern Conference. It seems a lot less repetative. Same for division. Second, I don't know about the aesthetics of listing each year a title was won under the Titles section. Maybe make the number a link to an in-article header that lists the titles instead. That would allow for a more compact box with the specific information still readily available. Otherwise, looks great. Good work so far. Z4ns4tsu 15:27, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Sounds good. Okay, so the new layout examples have "Conference" and "Division" removed for redundancy now, and I've used the Detroit Red Wings infobox as an example to show how linking to the title list on an article might work (for now all three numbers just go to Detroit Red Wings#Facts since that is where they currently show where all the titles are on their article). I also went along and removed "Title" from Division Title and Conference Title too, since it kind of had the same redundancy you mentioned with the Conference/Division sections.--Resident Lune 16:20, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Looks awesome. I like it a lot better than the current box. Z4ns4tsu 16:27, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Looks much better then the old ones. I'll use this template on Frölunda HC and then on some other SEL teams that needs some work and updates. --Krm500 01:32, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
