Nguoi Viet Daily News

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nguoi Viet Daily News was the first daily newspaper published in Vietnamese in the United States. The newspaper was started by Yen Ngoc Do in 1978.

Nguoi Viet Daily News began as a weekly four-page newspaper. The first issue, dated December 6, 1978, was printed in a garage in Garden Grove, California. Do financed the initial press run of 2,000 copies with $4,000 of his own savings.

Do was criticized by readers who thought the newspaper needed to be more critical of the communist regime in the unified Vietnam. After Do published photos of Ho Chi Minh's tomb in 1989, 150 protesters gathered outside the newspaper's office.

In 1994, 300 protesters stormed the newspaper's offices and demanded that Do apologize for defending a trip to Vietnam by Dr. Co Pham, president of the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce. Do refused to apologize but did resign as editor of Nguoi Viet.

Today the newspaper has more than 70 employees and a circulation of 18,000.

Nguoi Viet means Vietnamese People.
