- Ngoma [surname], in Malawi, it means maize. It is a Ngoni name in the northern part of Malawi especially in Mzimba district. For example, there are Ngomas in Euthini, Edingeni and Thumbi. The Ngomas are originally from South Africa; descendants of Zulus who went north during Chakas time. The Ngomas at Thumbi came to settle in the Henga Valley long time ago. They and the Chinulas settled at Mgozga and founded a village there called Mugozga ( derived from a big Old tree that used to dominate the skies of this village for hundreds of years until it dried up and died in 1990. The name still lives own.
All Ngomas in Mzimba are related and share such middle names as Chikumukumu and Dumakude. The Ngomas, like most Ngonis, who settled in Mzimba, speak [[[Chitumbuka]]] these days. The Ngomas at Thumbi are the traditional owners of the land together with their cousins the Chinulas as Chieftains. They had settled at Mugozga from Chikambalala (Kacheche). They came to Kacheche from Edundu, in Mzimba district.
