NGC 2442 / 2443 is an intermediate spiral galaxy about 50 million light-years away in the constellation Volans. It was discovered by Sir John Herschel, who came up with the name "Meathook Galaxy" because he thought one of its spiral arms was hook-like.[citation needed] It is thought to be disturbed by an unseen companion galaxy.[citation needed]
