Ngāti Porou

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ngāti Porou iwi is among the top ten Māori tribes of New Zealand by population.

It is based in the Gisborne area - with tribal boundaries from Potikirua in the north to Te Toka-a-Taiau (a rock that used to sit in the mouth of the Gisborne harbour) in the south.

The name is derived from the eponymous ancestor, Porourangi.

They fought against the Hauhau in the East Cape War of 1865-1868.

Well-known current or former members or affiliates of the tribe include Sir Apirana Ngata, George Nepia, Te Moana Nui a Kiwa Ngarimu VC, Parekura Horomia, John Tamihere, Moana Jackson, Wiremu Paraone Turei (the Anglican Bishop of Aotearoa), and Georgina Beyer.
