The Ngāti Kahungunu iwi, one of the largest tribes of New Zealand Māori, is based in Wairārapa , Hawke's Bay and Wairoa.

Its membership recorded at the 2001 census was 51,552, including Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, Ngāti Kahungunu region unspecified, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Whanganui a Orotu, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tamatea, and Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki-nui-a-Rua.[1]. Ihaka Whaanga was also a chief in Nuhaka.

The tribe experienced a civil war in December 1865 and January 1866, which historians treat as part of the East Cape War.
