New York is one of the 50 states in the United States, and is located on the edge of both the New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions of the eastern United States. It is made up of two dominant regions: Upstate New York and Downstate New York. Downstate refers to New York City and its surrounding suburbs while Upstate covers the remainder of the state. Upstate New York is divided into five smaller regions: Western New York, Central New York, the Capital District, North Country, and the Southern Tier. The state, known as the "Empire State", features numerous well-known attractions, such as Niagara Falls and Adirondack Park.
