Newton is a city in Newton County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,459 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Newton CountyGR6.

Newton is located at 30°51′1″N, 93°45′15″W (30.850397, -93.754149)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²). 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.18% is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,459 people, 731 households, and 508 families residing in the city. The population density was 172.6/km² (446.9/mi²). There were 900 housing units at an average density of 63.2/km² (163.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 59.78% White, 31.60% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 6.02% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.28% of the population.

There were 731 households out of which 35.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 13.8% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 129.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 138.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,667, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $28,571 versus $18,542 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,416. About 25.0% of families and 27.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.1% of those under age 18 and 17.6% of those age 65 or over.
