The New Zealand women's national field hockey team, nicknamed The Black Sticks, represents New Zealand in the international field hockey competitions. The team played its first international match on August 4, 1935, when it defeated Australia in Melbourne: 1-2. In the 1970s New Zealand did not compete at the Hockey World Cups, because the national association was loyal to the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations (IFWHA), which merged with the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in 1982.
