New Zealand Fire Service Commission

The New Zealand Fire Service Commission is the overseeing authority controlling the New Zealand Fire Service and the New Zealand National Rural Fire Authority. It is established via the New Zealand Fire Service Act 1975.

The Commission is composed of five members, and the Minister is required by law to appoint at least one person who is either a fire engineer or has experience as a senior operational fire fighter.

The current members of the Commission are:

  • Dame Margaret Bazley - Chairperson
  • Terry Scott - Deputy Chair
  • Angela Foulkes
  • Dr Piers Reid
  • John Hercus

The Fire Service Commission is a crown entity that reports to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The Chair and members are appointed by the Governor-General.
