Communities

NY 9R begins in the shadow of the Interstate 87/New York State Route 7 interchange (I-87 exit 7) at an intersection with US 9 (Loudon Road) in Latham. The junction also serves as the connection point between the limited-access NY 7 west and US 9. NY 9R starts opposite the ramps leading to and from NY 7, gaining the name Columbia Street Extension as it heads east. The route intersects Old Loudon Road before becoming Columbia Street and narrowing from four lanes to two at Johnson Road.

Columbia Street proceeds to the northeast through lightly populated areas of Albany's northern suburbs, passing commercial buildings and small cul-de-sacs as the route approaches Cohoes. A half-mile west of an intersection with New York State Route 470 on the city's western edge, the surroundings of NY 9R change drastically as the route becomes lined with residential dwellings. The string of homes continue to the junction with NY 470 on the Cohoes city line, where NY 9R turns north onto Baker Avenue. NY 470, which begins at the crossroads, follows Columbia Street into downtown Cohoes.

As the two-lane Baker Avenue, NY 9R proceeds north through eastern Colonie, passing through both residential neighborhoods, as is the case north of the intersection with NY 470, and lightly populated areas, such as the half-mile from Maple Lane north to Boght Road, a stretch over which the west side of NY 9R is mostly undeveloped. In contrast, the east side over this distance is lined with neighborhoods, fully populated and developed. At Boght Road, NY 9R turns left and heads westward. The complexion of the roadway is similar to that of the first quarter-mile of Baker Avenue, as the two-lane road is lined with a steady stream of houses. Three-quarters of a mile from Baker Avenue, NY 9R comes to an end at an intersection with US 9. Boght Road, however, continues westward.
