New York State Route 176 is a north-south state highway located in the central part of New York, USA, connecting Cayuga County with Oswego County. The northern terminus is at New York State Route 48 in the city of Fulton and the southern terminus is at New York State Route 370 in the northeast part of the town of Cato, east of Meridian.

The route used to extend north from its current northern terminus to New York State Route 3 three-quarters of a mile to the north and, earlier, to a northern terminus at County Route 4 in the town of Scriba, east of the City of Oswego.

[edit] History

Originally, NY 176 continued north from its present terminus at NY 48, forming a concurrency with NY 48 north to New York State Route 3 (Broadway). At NY 3, NY 176 turned east onto Broadway, running concurrent with NY 3 to 7th Street. NY 176 turned north onto 7th, following the street out of Fulton. As Whittaker Road, NY 176 continued northward to Scriba, where it terminated at a simple four-way intersection with County Route 4. The route was truncated to the NY 3/NY 48 intersection at an unknown date, with the former routing of NY 176 between NY 3 and CR 4 becoming County Route 176.[1]

In 2004, signage for NY 176 along NY 48 in Fulton was removed, implying that NY 176 had been truncated to the former southern terminus of the NY 48/NY 176 overlap.[1] This was confirmed in the 2005 New York State Department of Transportation Traffic Volume Report, as no mention of a NY 48/NY 176 overlap exists in the report.[2]
