Communities

NY 153 begins at a modest intersection with NY 96 in the village of Pittsford north of Pittsford's commercial district, gaining the name Washington Road. The route travels east for a short distance before curving to the northeast, ascending slightly in altitude in the progress. After clearing a small hill, NY 153 meets Golf Avenue. North of Golf, NY 153 enters the town of Pittsford as it travels up another hill before leveling off ahead of Interstate 490, which it crosses by way of an overpass rebuilt in the mid-1990s.

Four-tenths of a mile past I-490, NY 153 intersects New York State Route 31F, Fairport Road, on the Pittsford-East Rochester town line.

Upon crossing the town line, NY 153 becomes South Washington Street. The route acts as the main thoroughfare through the town, carrying close to 11,000 vehicles per day between NY 31F and West Commercial Street.[2] At West Commercial, commuters destined for I-490 are instructed to turn left to gain access via exit 24.

A short distance north of Commercial, NY 153 dips below the CSX Rochester Subdivision, passing under the double-tracked line before returning to ground level at Despatch Drive. At the underpass, NY 153 becomes North Washington Street.

Two blocks north of Despatch Drive, NY 153 meets Linden Avenue, a major east-west arterial linking NY 441 in Penfield to Whitney Road in Perinton. On the other side of Linden, NY 153 exits East Rochester and enters Perinton, though no signs are present indicating the Perinton town line. Roughly three-tenths of a mile ahead, the route breaks from its northeast alignment and takes a northwesterly routing towards Penfield. In the center of the 90-degree turn, North Washington Street leaves NY 153 to continue north to Linear Park. In the absence of Washington, NY 153 assumes the name Panorama Trail South and continues into Penfield.

After entering Penfield, the route descends into the Panorama Valley, dropping 100 feet over three-quarters of a mile to intersect NY 441 by way of a diamond interchange. At the westbound access ramps, NY 153 terminates; however, state maintenance continues north for another 0.17 miles as Reference Route 942B.[2]

In 1983, New York State Route 253, the predecessor to NY 153, was truncated from NY 153's current northern terminus at NY 441 to New York State Route 65 in Mendon. In its place, the segment from NY 96 to NY 441 was designated NY 153.

The NY 153 designation was originally assigned to the current Washington CR 153, but this alignment was decommissioned in 1980.
