Founded in 1888, the New York Law Journal is the top-selling legal daily in the United States. The newspaper covers legal news, decisions, court calendars, and legislation, and provides analysis and insight in columns written by leading professionals.

The Law Journal is published Monday through Friday, with a circulation of 11,450 and a readership of 35,500. The paper's website, www.nylj.com, has 3,500 subscribers. According to a Law Journal survey, 70% of subscribers keep their copies and 78% of subscribers have read at least 4 out of the last 5 issues. Readers spend an average of 25 minutes with each issue. The newspaper publishes a number of special issues, the most well-known of which is its "NYLJ 100" rankings of New York's 100 largest law firms.

Its primary audience is litigators. Because the full decisions of many New York City court cases, particularly the New York City Civil Court, are reported only in the Law Journal, it is common for lawyers practicing in these courts to cite to the newspaper for case law authority.

The Law Journal is published by American Lawyer Media, which is owned by financier Bruce Wasserstein, whose other media holdings include New York Magazine.
