New York Cares
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New York Cares is New York City's leading volunteer organization. New York Cares states that it "meets pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service". The New York Cares model of volunteer management has been such a success that it inspired the creation of The Hands On Network and 63 affiliate organizations in the United States and around the world.
New York Cares was founded by a group of friends in 1987. In 2006, its 50 staff members engaged more than 33,000 volunteers in service, touching the lives of 250,000 New Yorkers in need. The organization is not a volunteer matching service. Its staff works with 850 community agencies (called Project Partners) to diagnose their needs for volunteers, and its plans and manages volunteer projects (750 each month) that typically would not exist if New York Cares had not created them. Each project is led by a highly-trained and dedicated volunteer Team Leader.
New York Cares volunteers strengthen the community and meet critical needs by teaching children the joy of reading, beautifying our parks and schools, preparing meals for the homebound, distributing coats and holiday gifts to those who would otherwise go without and so much more. New York Cares is also a member of the Points of Light Foundation. The New York City Mayor's Volunteer Center lists New York Cares of one of its primary partners.[1]
