The New York Asian Film Festival was first held in 2002, growing out of the New York Korean Film Festival that was held in 2001. Programmed and operated by Subway Cinema, the festival generally features contemporary and classic titles from Eastern Asia and Southeast Asia, including Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong and Thailand, though Vietnamese and Indian films have been screened in recent years. Genres favored by the festival tend toward martial arts and horror films.

It is held annually at The ImaginAsian and Anthology Film Archives, usually around the end of June. The festival is also famous among locals for its prize giveaways and eccentric movie introductions.
