New York Arrows

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New York Arrows were a soccer team (football club) based out of Uniondale, New York that played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League. They played from 1978 to 1984. Their home arena was Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The basis of the New York Arrows for the first year was the Rochester Lancers of the outdoor NASL. Several mainstays of the Arrows dynasty, such as Steve Zungul, Shep Messing and Renato Cila came from the Rochester squad.

The Arrows won the first four titles in MISL history, 1978-79 (over Philadelphia), 1979-80 (over Houston), 1980-81 (over St. Louis) and 1981-82 (over St. Louis). Steve Zungul, so named "The Lord of All Indoors", regularly scored nearly 5 goals per game and on one instance, scored seven in a game vs. the Phoenix Inferno in 1981.

Though a powerhouse on the field, they were not a powerhouse at the box office. Shortly after the team won its fourth and final MISL title, the team was sold and star player Steve Zungul was traded away. The team folded in 1984.
