New York & Company, Inc. is a publicly-traded retail company specializing in women's apparel, which was founded by Joseph Jay Lerner in 1918 in New York City and previously traded under the name Lerner New York. Michael, Charles and Samuel Lerner were all involved in the company.
The company competes at a price level below other retailers in its category, such as former parent The Limited.
From the 1960s it was controlled by Meshulam Riklis through his Rapid-American holding company, which controlled the McCrory Stores five and dime, with which it was often co-located.
In 1985 its 798 stores were purchased by The Limited, Inc. When sold in 2002, the company operated stores as both "Lerner New York" and "New York & Company"'.
