New Rules for Boats deal in sweet melodies and harmonies, swaying guitar-based music and flippantly substantial lyrics spread right across the territory of pop, country and rock to lay out a hammock of sugar-coated disquiet for you to rock yourself in.

Quickly making good friends and influencing each other the past year or two has seen New Rules for Boats reach the finals of the Western Australian Music's "The Next Big Thing 2004" (with previous winners including John Butler, Fourth Floor Collapse and Snowman), be nominated for various WAMi awards for 'Best Country Act', release the All At Sea EP and perform with international acts such as Kathleen Edwards, the Mountain Goats and Electrelane, as well as Australian stalwarts Machine Translations, The Grates, The Panics, Eskimo Joe, Little Birdy, Dave McCormack and 78 Saab. They've completed tours with Bob Evans & The Panda Band and their songs have found lots of rotation on stations such as Triple J, RTRFM (Perth) & FBi (Sydney), 96FM (Perth), 3RRR (Melbourne), 4ZZZ (Brisbane) and 2SER (Sydney).

New Rules for Boats have just completed recording their debut album to be released sometime early in the new year and the first single from the as yet unnamed record, "I'm Your Tenant" was released in August. The band also embarked on their first national tour under the wing of compatriots the Panda Band.

Their influences start at bands such as Whiskeytown, Pavement or The Decemberists and end at Wilco, the Shins or Neko Case however this has evolved into their own unique sound.

In 2007 New Rules for Boats have been nominated for several WAMi awards, including best Indi Pop Act, best guitarist for Sean Pollard and best bassist for Benjamin Golby. They have also been included for the Perth Big Day Out and support gigs for Yo La Tengo.
