[edit] Route description

The Middlesex County section of Route 440 starts at Exit 10 of the New Jersey Turnpike (where it continues as Interstate 287) and continues to the Outerbridge Crossing in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. After spending some distance in Staten Island, as NY 440, Route 440 crosses the Bayonne Bridge into Bayonne, where the Hudson County section starts. Route 440 then continues through Bayonne and Jersey City, New Jersey before ending at U.S. Route 1-9 Truck.

[edit] History

A section in Hudson County between the Bayonne Bridge and the west side of Jersey City was formerly Route 169, but was renamed Route 440 in 2001 to achieve continuity with the numbering of the New York State portion of the road on Staten Island. The original plan was to extend Route 440 along the west side of Bayonne, but local opposition killed the project. Much of the right-of-way for the proposed Route 440 in Bayonne is now being developed as parkland. Before the 1953 renumbering, the Middlesex County section was Route S4. The Hudson County section was once part of Route 1.

[edit] Future Improvements

  • Route 440 will be resurfaced southbound from just west of the Outerbridge Crossing to the New Jersey Turnpike. This section of freeway is currently concrete slabs and is showing signs of severe wear and stress. The plan is to repair needed concrete slabs and then resurface over the top of the entire highway providing a continued smooth surface. [1]
