Verizon New England Telephone & Telegraph, Inc., formerly New England Telephone & Telegraph Co., is a Bell Operating Company that serves the majority of New England. It is an operating unit of Verizon Communications.

New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. became part of NYNEX on January 1, 1984, when AT&T was divested of its local operating companies. After Bell Atlantic acquired NYNEX, New England Telephone retained its corporate name and began doing business as Bell Atlantic. After Bell Atlantic bought GTE, the corporate name changed to Verizon New England Telephone & Telegraph, Inc. and began doing business as Verizon New England.

New England Telephone is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.

Prior to 1984, AT&T controlled New England Telephone, holding 86% of the company.

It had no connection to New England Telephone and Telegraph, a short-lived company that dissolved in 1879; or Southern New England Telephone (SNET) which covered Connecticut and small parts of New York.

Its slogan was "We're the one for you, New England."

[edit] History

New England Telephone, through various mergers and successor companies, has carried various names and used numerous logos.

New England Telephone and Telegraph Co.
Being a part of AT&T, New England Telephone followed the various corporate looks of AT&T over the years. After the 1984 Bell System Divestiture the Bell logo and name was assigned to the Regional Holding Companies.

In 1969, AT&T revamped its corporate identity, which included the modern Bell logo. In 1984, after the AT&T divestiture, New England Telephone and New York Telephone were spun off to the newly created Regional Holding Company, NYNEX Corporation. The logo is still in use today on Verizon trucks and pay phones.
NYNEX
In 1994, the New England Telephone and New York Telephone names ceased to exist, both became branded as simply NYNEX, and the Bell System logo was dropped from the corporate logo, however, it remained on phone booths, even on the then-new NYNEX signs.

In 1996, Bell Atlantic merged with NYNEX. The logo brings to mind its namesake ocean. The merger also restored the Bell System logo.
Verizon New England Telephone & Telegraph, Inc.
Since 2000, the successor company to New England Telephone has been Verizon Communications. The Bell System logo disappeared, again (except on trucks and phone booths). "Verizon" is added to the NET&T corporate name, and it does business as "Verizon New England".

On January 16, 2007, Verizon announced plans to split its New England Telephone operations. Verizon will split off its operations in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire from Verizon New England Telephone & Telegraph and its into a new operating company (effectively a new Bell Operating Company), with its name currently unknown. Verizon will then spin off the company and merge it with FairPoint Communications [1].
