Symphyotrichum novae-angliae |
New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, synonym: Aster novae-angliae) is found throughout northeastern, central and northwestern North America. The plant grows up to 2 metres with stout, hairy stem. Flower heads are 2.5 - 5 cm wide, with yellow disk flowers and white through pink and purple ray flowers. Leaves are clasping, lanceolate, and generally entire.
This plant's habitat includes damp meadows, fields, and shores.
There are numerous cultivars of this plant, developed in Europe and the United States. Selections are made for flower color, compact habits, and resistance to diseases such as powdery mildew.
