[edit] Introduction

New College Boat Club has always been one of the most successful college boat clubs in Oxford. We have consistently held high positions in the University competitions, and have good records at various external competitions and regattas.

[edit] History and the 1912 incident

The boat club history goes back well before the great year of 1912 when New College Boat Club competed for England in the Olympic Games held in Stockholm, Sweden. Reaching the final and winning the toss New College politely offered the Leander crew (made up by Magdalen College, Oxford) the choice of side (which was traditionally offered back) however the Leander Crew rudely chose the seriously favoured side of the river. New College rowed bravely however lost by 1/2 a length. The King of Sweden, so impressed by New College's effort and gentlemanly conduct offered NCBC the royal colours of Sweden (Purple and Gold, worn by the boat club to this day). Toasts are often made in NCBC to 'GDBM' or 'God Damn Bloody Magdalen'.

[edit] Competition history

NCBC are currently one of the few boat clubs who have held the women's headship in both Torpids and Summer Eights.
