[edit] Notable Moments in New Caney High School History
Starting in the fall of 1983 New Caney High School (Then classified as a 5A team (The largest classification of schools in the state of Texas)) and ending in the fall of 1987 New Caney High School's varsity football teams lost 43 consecutive games; a national record at the time. When the school defeated Santa Fe High School of Santa Fe, TX (Currently there is no established Santa Fe High School, Santa Fe, TX Wikipedia page at this time) to end the losing streak in 1987; local TV channels and numerous network camera crews were on location to document the occasion. New Caney made national news with the win. The footage of fans storming the field was featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and ESPN.
New Caney High School has enjoyed continued success since the 5A days of the 80's and is currently playing their games in the state's 4A class. Adam Dunn of the Cincinnati Reds played quarterback for the New Caney High School Eagles; and was a key factor in New Caney making the playoffs in back-to-back seasons in the 90's.
A little known fact ... New Caney was forced into the 5A division by the state's governing body ... the UIL (University Interscholastic League) in the early 1980's. This left New Caney High School (with an enrollment of only 1515; just 15 total students over the 5A limit at the time) facing schools almost 3 times larger in enrollment.
Final note: The losing streak record was broken and shattered a few years later when the Davis High School (Houston) Panthers went on a 73 game losing streak that spanned 8 years.
