Route 16 is a secondary leg of the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH). The 51 kilometre-long route goes from an interchange with the mainline TCH (Highway 2) near the Nova Scotia border in Aulac, to the Confederation Bridge at Cape Jourimain, connecting New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island. Port Elgin is the only major community along the route.
Route 16 has been part of the New Brunswick highway network since the 1920s. The only major changes to the route have been a Port Elgin bypass and approaches to the Confederation Bridge.
