Neve Sha'anan (Haifa)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neve Shaanan ( 32°47′N, 35°00′E; Hebrew: נווה שאנן‎) is a vast neighborhood in Haifa, Israel which extends from the lower inclines of Mount Carmel, to midway across its slopes. The neighborhood is situated next to the celebrated Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology, and houses the Middle East's largest shopping mall, the "Grand Canyon" (this is a play on words, since "Kanyon" means mall in Hebrew).

The neighborhood is home to approximately 38,100 people as of 2004[1], about 14% of the city's total population. It consists of the lower, poorer "Yad Labanim" and "Hanita" areas, and the middle-classed "Ha Tichon" and "Asher". Neve Shaanan is known for its many religiously observant residents, as well as the high number of immigrants from the Commonwealth of Independent States who live there. It is also a prime residence for students and faculty of the nearby Technion.
