[edit] automatic gfdl of uploaded files

Hey Neutrality, you marked some of my images as GFDL even though I uploaded the images under a CC BY-SA license. (see Image:Mount mansfield 20040926.jpg for an example.) I reverted your addition of the GFDL license which you then reverted stating that, "all contribs to WP automatically released under the GFDL". I can certainly understand where you are coming from, the upload file page says: "By uploading a file to which you hold the copyright, you agree to licence it under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License."

However, from language elsewhere, I had assumed that if I specified another specific license that is "wikipedia compatible", that the GFDL would not apply. For example, on the upload file page under the guidelines it says: "Specify the licence of the file, adding the tags GFDL for GNU FDL, PD for public domain, etc. See Image copyright tags for more of these." If all files were automatically under the GFDL, why isn't it added automatically to all uploaded files? Why is it an optional tag? Also on the Wikipedia:Uploading_images#Licenses page it says: "If the image is licensed under the GFDL, please include "GFDL" in the description. If the image is under any other license please indicate this by using the appropriate message from Image copyright tags." The use of the word "if" makes it sound as if it is an option, not a requirement.

Has this been discussed anywhere? I personally have no problem with the GFDL, however, this should be clarified, because I suspect others have made the same assumption as me. Having non-copyright holders adding licenses to other peoples photos etc. seems to lessen its "authority" of "freeness". If it in fact agreed among the community that all uploaded files are under the GFDL, even if an alternative license is specified, perhaps it would be better if the copyright holder was informed that they need to add a GFDL tag or have the file removed if they don't agree.

Thanks, -Redjar 22:11, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Changing the MoS

Ben

Thank you for your tweaks to User:Jguk/policy proposal. I've also added tables of destinations and origins. Once you're happy with it, we'll need to find others to convince before we take it to the MOS talk page, though. Any suggestions? jguk 00:02, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Dates

Hi Ben. Can I ask why you changed all the date formats in Mary I of England from dd Month yyyy to Month dd, yyyy? This sort of thing really pisses many people off, when they see it as "creeping Americanisation of British articles", and with the use of user preferences it's a totally unnecessary edit anyway, apart from which errors can be introduced - in "Early life" you changed her birthdate from "18 February" to "February 13". Regards, Arwel 14:16, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rienzo

Rienzo is still editing under further sockpuppets User:65.161.65.104, User:MahBoys, and User:Sandor, and User:130.236.84.134.

This is in violation of a 3 month ban from the arbitration comittee - Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Rienzo

I would appreciate an immediate block of these accounts. CheeseDreams 14:36, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense

Was the missing 'r' intentional in your last BJAODN title? -- AllyUnion (talk) 02:07, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

By the way... have you looked over the 40+ additions of titles I added? -- AllyUnion (talk) 02:14, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

One bad joke to rule them all, one votes for deletion to find them, one deleted nonsense to bring them all and in the darkness bind them -- AllyUnion (talk) 21:56, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you!

Just a quick "thank you" for voting me for admin. Now all I've got to do is find out how to use these worrying new powers... Your vote was particularly appreciated, because I realise we haven't always seen eye to eye on tfd! Grutness|hello? 05:42, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hm... on second thoughts that may have been mistaken identity. But I'm very glad anyway! Grutness|hello?

[edit] Abayudaya

Did you have any basis to move Abayudaya to Abayudaya people? I have never heard them call that, and it seems to me to be a neologism. They are "the Abayudaya", not "the Abayudaya people". Barring a good reason for this, I am very inclined to move it back. -- Jmabel | Talk 07:28, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 2005 Hudson Valley Mall shooting incident

I just saw someone suggest merging your article with Hudson Valley Mall. It would give a nice expansion to that article and save it from being deleted. Would you consider incorporating it in the Mall article. Also, I'm curious, why do you feel this shooting is so important? I don't live anywhere near the area it happened - in fact I don't even live in the same country, and I didn't hear about it outside wikipedia. I'd like to see your info saved without Wikipedia being flooded by articles about every single shooting in the US. It would be too hard to draw line and determine what's notable. [edit] Stub sorting guidelines

I sincerely believe that we really need to lay down the law in stub sorting, and really provide a guideline. I believe that we should all attempt to reach a general consensus by April 2, 2005 in a set of rules that we can follow. Once we have built a set of guidelines, we can formally create a policy out of those guidelines. We need to define what a specialized topic stub is, how many articles it should cover, when is it appropriate to create it, what defines its need for its creation, what defines its need for deletion, what criteria it should follow, what are the general steps should one take when sorting a stub, whether or not to start using subst: for all templates, whether or not use subst: for all templates created by the meta-templates, and any other matters that may come up in consideration. I thank jag123 for initially creating the subpage for the project at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. Even though they have been discussed, I feel that we really need to confirm everything. For that, we should discuss each issue with its own sections, and raise a list of issues that we need to nail down before really continuing on. The English Wikipedia is nearly at 500k articles. Either the MediaWiki software needs to handle stubs such that they can be found with a simple union of categories, or the sorting is done manually by Wikipedians. Personally, I think the latter is less taxing on the server load, especially when we use subst:, which I think would help the Wikipedia out, performance wise. Please make your comments at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Guidelines. I apologize for making this somewhat of a spam notice, but since the project has more members, the project can finally decide on these important issues at hand. -- AllyUnion (talk) 23:24, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stalingrad Map

Too cool, great work man! GeneralPatton 00:15, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Um, Neutrality, can you please be more careful about attributions? Thanks. There are already description pages on Commons for these things, and duplicating them on Wikipedia is just begging for this sort of confusion (and muddying up the history trail too). iMeowbot~Mw 00:19, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Jews did WTC

Are you aware that I had started a poll on whether to keep this, one that's only been going for a couple of days? (It seems to me that it's a very similar case to AIDS Kills Fags Dead, which we did decide to keep, so I wanted to see what people though.) Why did you unilaterally delete it after the poll had only been going a couple of days? Noel (talk) 14:11, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template:ArbComOpenTasks / CD2 / RK2

Why did you move these cases to voting? There's no actual propals up for either of them yet. And please remember to update the location the cases are pointing when you moves cases from section to section :) -- Grunt   ҈  03:16, 2005 Feb 19 (UTC)

[edit] Manual of Style

Ben, maybe you could look at my comments on trying to resolve the great US v non-US English debate on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. If you felt able to lend your support, it would be great. If they gain support, I'll bring forward the fleshed out proposal that you've seen for more general comment. Kind regards, jguk 16:09, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] WikiSchool

Is there a wikipedia organization or club or school or something to help individuals who want to help but are having trouble writting in the "encyclopedic" style. I write very well in other forms, but when I try to write just cold hard facts with no humor, drama etc. I get a headache. See! I don't really get a headache but...

This kind of writing is a skill, not just a task with a set of instructions one can follow. ParkingStones 19:08, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] PRC, ROC, mainland China, Taiwan, etc.

Hello Neutrality. Thank you for joining the discussion over the titles of China-related topics articles. Would you mind help explain to the contributors who opposed renaming because they thought the new titles are confusing, that how these terms differ from each other, and how the choice of one of these terms as a title is important. Thanks in advance. — Instantnood 18:12, Feb 19 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Everyking clarification

Hi Neutrality, since you were one of the arbitrators who accepted the Everyking case I am letting you know that I have requested a clarification on the ruling on the talk page for that arbitration, since it may not be on your watchlist. [edit] Wikipedia:Spanish Translation of the Week

I would like to revive this project. I noticed that you've added yourself to the list of available Spanish-to-English translators. Are you interested in working on Spanish Translation of the Week? — J3ff 06:30, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Spellbot

I was thinking of creating a spellcheck bot that would highlight what it thinks are misspelled words using the GNU aspell. It would check US standardized spelling and international. Once it finds the spelling errors, it would quote passage of text (only enough that someone could find it), underline what words it thinks its misspelled, and post its errors on the discussion page. What do you think? -- AllyUnion (talk) 05:33, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Return of the Untagged Image project

You were kind enough to contribute to the Wikipedia:Untagged images project; I beg to draw your attention to part 2 of the project - there are about 12,000 more images in need of tagging. Any assistance you could provide would be most welcome. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] Scott Gall

Ben, I just saw your comment regarding Scott Gall's self-nomination for adminship. Just to let you know: Scott has Asperger's. He doesn't mean to be insensitive. I've just posted a comment to that effect and thought I'd let you know. Best, SlimVirgin 21:24, Feb 26, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Adminship

I've added a user page and changed my sig. If there are no other problems, please retract your objection and possibly support. Thanks. --brian0918 02:10, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Strongly oppose, even?

Can you expand on your reasoning as regards the proposed History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints move? I confess to feeling a little bemused that a lengthening succession of people, now rising to the august personage of an Arbitrator, vote against a page move to comply with the naming conventions; but no-one seems in the least interested in proposing any change to the naming conventions to satisfy whatever objections they presumably hold. As things stand, there seems no hope of achieving any consistency either way, which is all this editor wishes. Alai 19:35, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RfC

Hello there. I am recently being listed on RfC. Feel free to comment as you wish to. I regard it as a way out and to have the matter settled. Thanks. — Instantnood 18:35 Mar 1 2005 (UTC)

The sharing at RfC seems to be over. I have made a response there. Please take a look. I do hope that with everyone's effort Wikipedia will soon be the best encyclopedia ever. :-D — Instantnood 21:21 Mar 5 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Protecting Main Page images

Hi Neutrality,

When you put a new image on the Main Page [1], please remember to protect it (preferably before it goes on) and add {{ProtectedMainPageImage}} to the description page.

[edit] Armenian (people) → Armenian people

I'm just wondering where the talk and policy is for this move. Gareth Hughes 23:23, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for directing me to the appropriate policy! I agree with the move, but think that it would have been nice to read something from you on the talk page to say what you have done and why. As someone who has contributed a little to the page, it is rather odd to log on and find it in another place without any explanation why. I've fixed a couple of double redirects, so links to the page should all be working now. Gareth Hughes 16:35, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of my vote

Why did you delete my vote on Seattle in the FAC? [2] Nichalp 20:43, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Questions from RidG

  • I wanted to ask about the status of the PAC project (Wikipedia:WikiProject US Supreme Court Cases/PCA). Since you are participating in the Scotus Cases project, I wanted to ask if you know if this is something that's still being done, or if it's been placed on hiatus. I've also added this question to the talk page of the main SCOTUS Cases project in hopes of getting a response from all participants, so feel free to comment there if you prefer.
  • If you have a few free moments, it'd be great if you could review Oyama v. California - I've just finished this article after spending a good deal of time on it, so comments are certainly appreciated. RidG (talk) 22:34, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Seattle, Washington FAC

It has undergone a substantial over-haul since your vote. I believe two of your three objections have been completely addressed, and the subject of the third improved-I believe the history section flows better now. Perhaps you could take a look and update your opinion, when you have a chance? A look at how much more compehensive Seattle is than previous city FAs might influence your opinion... [edit] Simon bar Kokhba

I'd be interested in your view on my current edit conflict with User:Jcbos at Simon bar Kokhba. Jayjg (talk) 23:00, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Like I told Jayjg, my revert in this article was just to show him how annoying his behaviour is. Jayjg is following me at EN.wikipedia and reverting my edits, all of them. Reading his talkpage, I read several complaints of users with who he does the same. I'm a normal Wikipedian, not a vandal. Jcbos 23:09, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Adam Carr

Hi, Ben. Thanks for correcting my administrative error. I was (procedurally) wrong to block Adam Carr, and you (a) noticed it and (b) undid the block - in 8 minutes flat. Good to know you're on the job! -- Uncle Ed (talk) 18:49, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Open Tasks

Hey Neutrality, I'm just wondering why you deleted the suggestions I added to the list of requested articles on the Open Tasks template. I not mad or anything, but I hope I didn't do anything wrong or in bad ettiquette. I don't exactly know how that page works, so I assume you know better. Please enlighten me! --Dmcdevit 22:27, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
