Netrokona District

Netrokona is a district in central Bangladesh. It is a part of the Dhaka Division.

Netrokona District is situated in the northern part of Bangladesh. Near the Himalayan border.Netrokona Sadar Upazila is the area of 340.35 sq km distance and it is surrounded by Durgapur and kalmakanda upazilas on the north side, KENDUA and Gauripur upazilas on the south side, Barhatta and Atpara upazila’s on the east side, purbadhala upazila on the west. There are four rivers in Netrokona.They are Kangsha, Dhala, Magra, Teorkhali. Netrokona Pouroshaba (Town of Netrokona) consists of 9 wards and 33 mahallas. It is a municipal town with an area of 13.63 sq km. The town has a population of 53853; male 51.22%, female 48.78%. The density of population is 3951 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 54.2%. Administration Netrokona Sadar thana was established in 1874 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 13 union parishads, 306 mouzas and 344 villages.

Netrokona District is divided into 11 upazilas or subdivisions. These are:

  • Mohanganj : Mohangonj is one of the main business centers of Netrakona District. Mohangonj is well-connected by railways, and road with Dhaka via Mymensingh, and Netrakona. The water-ways also play a very important role in transportation system of Mohangonj. Mohangonj serves as a business hub for part of Sunamgonj district and Khaliajuir, Madan, Barhatta thana of Netrakona district. Huge amount of rice, and fish are sent to Dhaka and Myemensingh from Mohangonj.

Mohangonj Pilot Government High School is known for its quality of education in Netrakona district and surrounding districts. Mohangonj also has other high quality education institutions, including Mohangonj Degree College, Mohagonj Girls’ High School, and a recently established Mohangonj Girls’ College.

The late Abdul Momin is one of the brightest sons of Mohangonj. Mr. Momin was the publicity secretary of the then Pakistan Awame-league in 1966, a Member of National Assembly of Pakistan parliament in 1970, a minister of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib’s Government. He was elected as an MP in Bangladesh national assembly several times. He was a close ally of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib.

Although Professor Humaun Ahmed and Professor Zafar Iqbal hails from Kendua, both of them are more connected to Mohangonj than Kendua. They spent a significant part of their childhood life in their maternal uncle's house in Mohangonj.

The economy of Netrokona is largely agrarian. People make a living out of agriculture and fisheries. There are also many brick fields.

There are many interesting places in Netrakona. The most important place in Netrakona is Madanpur a village 8 kilometrte away from the district town. Here the MAZAR of Hazrat Shah Sultan Kamar Uddin Rumiis situated. Durgapur, near the Indo-Bangla border, is a good tourist spot. The Garo Pahar is situated there and people observe time-honored traditions. People living in Netrakona's mountains are the ancestors of the Upo Jatis. Khaliyajuri is a place dominated by waterways; the small villages are organised into "islands" and radio communications are poor. The late Abdul Momin is a well-known political leader, who hails from Mohangonj.The heart of Netrakona is KENDUA and known for its rice and fish. KENDUA is very popular for Bangladesh Ex-president Shahabuddin Ahmed, Great Scientist Prof. Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is from Kutubpur KENDUA , Prof. Humayun Ahmed (Bangla:হুমায়ুন আহমেদ) is one of the most popular novelists and dramatists in Bangladesh and his hometown in Kutubpur , KENDUA and popular social workers Late(1987) Abdus Sattar Khan hometown in -ALIPUR KENDUA who established ALIPUR PRIMARY SCHOOL KENDUA and his lots of social activities & developmental tasks involved in the social sector of KENDUA loves every one. This is the place where famous folk singer Abdul Kuddus Bayati & 19th century's great poet Roushon-Esdani were born.
