[edit] Eurobasket 1946

Netherlands first competed in the European championship at Eurobasket 1946. They won their first game, against England, but lost their second to France. As France also defeated England, the Netherlands finished in the middle of the three-team preliminary group. This put them in a playoff for 5th and 6th places against Switzerland. The Dutch lost 36-25 in that game.

[edit] Eurobasket 1947

The next year, the Netherlands team did not start as strongly. They lost all three of their preliminary round games. In the semifinal round, they split their two games by defeating Italy but losing to Yugoslavia. They placed second in the three-team group on point differential, advancing to the 11th/12th place playoff against Austria, which they won 54-33 to finish in 11th.

[edit] Eurobasket 1949

The Dutch team competed again at Eurobasket 1949. They won their games against Syria and Lebanon, but lost their other four games in the seven team round robin tournament to finish in 5th place.

[edit] Eurobasket 1951

In Paris's Eurobasket 1951, the Netherlands picked up three early wins but dropped a decision to Italy to finish preliminary round play at 3-1 and in a three-way tie for lead of the group. The tie-breaker system put the Dutch in third, eliminating them from contention for the top 8 spots. In the first classification round, they placed second in their group at 2-1 to advance to the classification 9-12 games. There, they defeated Austria but lost their final game to Finland to finish in 10th place of the 18 teams despite a 6-3 record.
