NetNewsWire is a commercial news aggregator for the Mac OS X, featuring a three-paned interface similar to Apple Computer's Mail client. It was developed by Brent and Sheila Simmons for their company Ranchero Software. They also develop a free lite version of NetNewsWire that doesn't include some of the advanced features of the commercial version. There is a chart available online that provides a side-by-side comparison chart for the commercial version and the lite version.

NetNewsWire first appeared publicly on July 12, 2002 with version 1.0 released on February 11, 2003. Version 2.0 was released in May 12, 2005. The updated version offered many new features such as Podcasting, Bloglines subscriptions, "smart lists", and a tabbed, inline browser.

On October 3, 2005, Om Malik broke the story that NewsGator was in negotiations to buy Ranchero and in particular NetNewsWire to bring their NewsGator Online RSS synchronisation service to the Macintosh platform. [1] This was confirmed the next day by NewsGator and the original developer, Brent Simmons. [2] [3]
