NES Open Tournament Golf, (Mario Open Golf in Japan), is a golf-based video game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It is actually the fifth game featuring Mario as the golfer, but it is only one of three to be released outside of Japan, the previous two being the NES and Game Boy games, both known simply as "Golf". The other two, Golf: Japan Course and Golf: U.S. Course, were released only in Japan for the Famicom Disk System.

The game's "Stroke Play" can be played by one to two players. Like the Mario console platformers released around the time, the first player will play as Mario, and the second player is Luigi. At certain points during gameplay, the Mario Bros. are offered advice by their caddies, Princess Peach and Princess Daisy.

In the one-player "Match Play", in which the winner is whoever wins the most holes, Mario plays alone, playing against five computer-controller opponents. He will first challenge Luigi, who ranks at Beginner 1. Afterwards, he will face off with four newly created characters:

Steve - Beginner 2
Mark - Amateur
Tony - Semi-Professional
Billy - Professional

The courses take place in the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

[edit] Differences between the Japanese and US versions

The US version features a more elaborate clubhouse with various options not available in the Japanese version. These include a bank to deposit any winnings the player may receive and a name editor to change the names of the players competing in the Stroke Play mode.

The Japanese version has 3 additional courses not available in the other version (located in France, Australia and Hawaii) and does not include a US course.

The soundtrack differs notably and the graphics have been updated in the US version as opposed to the Japanese version.

The game will be released in its original NES form on the Wii's Virtual Console service in Europe and Australia. No other regions have it confirmed for release yet.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Princess Daisy's trophy claimed that she had an appearance in Mario Golf, though the writers obviously meant, NES Open Tournament Golf, which she was Luigi's answer to Mario's Princess Peach, though she did not appear in the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color version of Mario Golf. and this is the first game where Daisy is Luigi's love interest, despite the fact that Peach is Mario's love interest since, Super Mario Bros.
