The Neotropical parrots (tribe Arini, sometimes subfamily Arinae) belong to the family of the true parrots Psittacidae. They consist of two main groups, easily recognized as short-tailed and long-tailed species (Miyaki et al., 1998). Presently, there is increasing consideration to elevate the group to subfamily status, in which case the short- and long-tailed lineages would be cinsidered tribes in the Arinae.
