The Neotropical parrots (tribe Arini, sometimes subfamily Arinae) belong to the family of the true parrots Psittacidae. They consist of two main groups, easily recognized as short-tailed and long-tailed species (Miyaki et al., 1998). Presently, there is increasing consideration to elevate the group to subfamily status, in which case the short- and long-tailed lineages would be cinsidered tribes in the Arinae.

Long-tailed clade
- Anodorhynchus - blue macaws (2 living species, 1 recently extinct)

- Ara - true macaws (8 living species, at least one recently extinct)
- Orthopsittaca - Red-bellied Macaw

- Diopsittaca - Red-shouldered Macaw
- Guarouba - Golden Conure
- Conuropsis - Carolina Parakeet (extinct)[1]
- Aratinga - large conures (some 25 living species, probably at least one recently extinct)
- Rhynchopsitta - thick-billed parrots (2 species)

- Leptosittaca - Golden-plumed Parakeet[1]

- Pyrrhura - red-tailed conures (around two dozen species, one possibly recently extinct)
