Detective Inspector Neil Manson is a character in the long-running TV series The Bill. He has been in the show since 2003. He is played by Andrew Lancel. As DI Manson is a CID officer he does not have a callsign and in radio communications is simply referred to as "DI Manson".
The post of Acting Detective Inspector had been held by DS Nixon for 18 months. She was devastated when she was informed that was to be demoted to Detective Sergeant and that a new Detective Inspector was to be appointed.
Manson is no stranger to controversy and his personal life seems to be the one thing that could make and break his career. His swift rise through the ranks is largely thanks to his connections (his late father-in-law was a Deputy Assistant Commissioner). However his womanising ways and his father-in-law's habit of frequenting brothels have put a considerable stain on his marriage and his work. He had a relationship with PC Andrea Dunbar (the affair that only ended when she died). He also shared an intimate moment with DC Suzie Sim - this consequently cost him the chance to be promoted to Acting DCI (a position he subsequently gained by default).
Neil is married to a lawyer Phillipa and the pair have a five year old son called Jake. The pair agreed to give their marriage another go after Phillipa confronted Neil about his extra-marital affair, but when Neil's investigation into a paedophile ring lead to the death of her father, Phillipa lashed out at Neil before leaving him and moving with her mother to Spain. Jake remains in Neil's custody, though it's currently unclear as to whether things will stay that way.
Manson was at one stage arrested for murder. In this case Manson was nearly kidnapped en route to a prison transfer, and this was thwarted with a swift intervention by TROJAN officers led by Jack Meadows. His boss managed to prove his innocence and Manson was returned to his position.
He later returned the favour when Meadows was also at the centre of controversy.
