Nederhop

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nederhop came to life in the late 1980's when the Amsterdam crew Osdorp Posse first started to record tracks in Dutch. Eventhough these songs weren't of great quality, it was representing Dutch hip hop back then. Eventually Osdorp Posse released their debut album Osdorp Stijl in 1992, which was the first hip hop cd in Dutch ever. The songs of Osdorp Posse sound raw, somewhat rough around the edges. The beats, created by producer Seda, have a familiar heavy sound and are similar to U.S. oldschool hip hop. Or as frontman Def-P describes it: Hardcore Rap. Within the 17 years of de Osdorp Posse's existence, the crew never really changed their style and are still making hardcore hip hop.

In 1995 rapper Extince took Nederhop to a new (commercial) level. With two of his singles Spraakwater and Kaal of Kammen being major hits in the mid-1990's, Extince was the first Dutch rapper making the Dutch charts. Prins Extince, as he calls himself, is greatly respected in the Nederhop scene.

So now there were two styles dominating the Dutch hip hop landscape: Extince, known for his easy flows, catchy songs and funky tunes, while hardcore performers like Westklan and Osdorp Posse found their own niche group of fans.

A combination of these two styles gave birth to de Spookrijders, a three man hip hop group founded in 1996. With MC's Stefan and Clyde rapping about their personal lives and life in Amsterdam (as a black man), de Spookrijders even gained respect from non-hip hop musicians and fans. Most people admired the work of producer/DJ Cliff 'the Jazz' Nille after releasing Spookrijders' debut album'De Echte Shit. Nille's sound is best described soulful, jazzy, though raw. It created a vibe different from the exsisting Nederhop acts of that time. In 1999 de Spookrijders hit the charts twice with the hits Klokkenluiders, a song which came to existence after a Spookrijders' concert in Amsterdam-West, which is legendary for the great disturbance afterwards and Ik ben de man. Both these songs appeared on the second album, Klokkenluiders van Amsterdam. After some personal argues among the three crewmembers, de Spookrijders split up in 2003, after releasing their and final third album Hee... Spookies!!

Futhermore, the Dutch Hip Hop landscape was given a boost by Opgezwolle, a versatile rapgroup from Zwolle. Consisting of 3 members; Delic, Stickz and Rico. Their latest album called "Eigen Wereld" (Own world) appeared in the 'Album Top 100' at number 4; the highest notation of a Dutch rap-album ever. Also their tour for this album made a good impression and years of touring created a vast and steady fanbase.
