[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Grams is meant to summon all the Halliwell matriarchs for Wyatt's Wiccaning, a blessing similar to a baptism. However, she thought Piper had kept with tradition and had a girl and is disappointed in Wyatt. She refuses to perform the Wiccaning for a boy or even hold the baby. Piper is hurt by Grams' disappointment over the newest addition to the Halliwell family. Meanwhile, Paige casts a truth spell on her boyfriend to see if he can handle her big witch secret. He quickly reveals that though comfortable with her magic, he is married and has 2 children. Phoebe contemplates Jason's invitation to move to China, even though it will take her away from her family. The Necromancer demon has returned from the Spirit Realm seeking to absorb their magical spirits. Gram states the last time he appeared was during Prue's Wiccaning. She does not tell them that she and the demon ghost were lovers. She convinces Piper and Paige to make a potion to banish the demon ghost back to the underworld. When they find him, he is surprised to see Grams and calls out to her. They throw the potion, which does not kill him, but puts him into ghostly form. The Necromancer learns of Wyatt's Wiccaning and kidnaps Grams. He and Grams loved each other once and he wants to use the Halliwells to turn them both into living beings again. She agrees to go with it and when the sisters call Grams back, the Necromancer follows her. They have found a spell to vanquish him, but only another ghost, like Grams, can cast it. Grams is torn between her love for the demon and her love for her family. Paige casts a truth spell on her before she can call the matriarchs to enliven she and her ghostly lover. Under the spell, Grams reveals she does love the demon truthfully, but she loves her family more. She says the vanquishing spell, apologizes to Piper for holding her bitterness against Wyatt, and performs the Wiccaning.

[edit] Book of Shadows

[edit] Enemies

  • Creeper Demon: Demons who live in shadow and prey on the souls of good beings.
  • Necromancer Demon: Armand, the Necromancer, has dominion over the dead and uses his power over them to absorb their spirit and gains a temporary fix of life. Armand was a ghost of a demon who was vanquished. He no longer possesses power of his own, but by feeding on the souls of the magical dead he gets temporary life. The length of his empowerment depends on the strength of the spirit.

[edit] Spells

  • To Summon the Creeper Demon: Demons who dwell in slivers of night, uncloak your shadows to witches' sight.
  • Truth Spell: For those who want the truth revealed, opened hearts and secrets unsealed. From now until its now again, after which the memory ends. Those who now are in this house, will hear the truth from other mouth.
  • To Summon a Spirit: Light several candles in a circular pattern and chant outside the circle: Hear these words, hear my cry, spirit from the other side. Come to me, I summon thee. Cross now the great divide.
  • To Summon the Halliwell Matriarchs: I call forth from space and time, Matriarchs from the Halliwell line. Mothers, daughters, sisters, friends. Our family spirit without end. To gather now in this sacred place, and help us bring this child to grace.
  • To Summon the Necromancer: Place bones and skull in the shape of a pentagon. Pour red sand into a pentagon and chant: Evocum A letiterum abdigo. Manes ascendo. Manes ascendo.
  • To Vanquish the Necromancer: The necromancer is technically dead, and therefore a spirit. This is why the To Vanquish a Spirit spell must to be used.
  • To Vanquish a Spirit: Another spirit or a person's astral self must recite these words in the presence of the unwanted spirit: Ashes to ashes, spirit to spirit. Take his soul, banish this evil.

[edit] Trivia

  • The episode title is a reference to the 1984 movie Romancing the Stone, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
  • Baby Wyatt becomes blessed by the Halliwell Matriarchs in a Wiccaning in this episode.
  • We discover that Grams had an affair with a demon in this episode.
  • Actress Scout Taylor-Compton reprises her role as Thistle the Fairie.
  • This is reportedly actress Jennifer Rhodes' favorite episode she appeared in, which she told fans at the 2005 Wizard World comic book convention in Long Beach, California.
  • In the episode Bride and Gloom, Cole said that demons and other evil beings cannot love, which is why the Warlock Zile couldn't say "I love you", but the Necromancer told Grams that he loved her in this episode.
  • This is the second time the Truth Spell is used. It was used previously in the season one episode The Truth Is Out There...and It Hurts when Prue wanted to know if Andy could handle her being a witch. Paige does the same thing for her boyfriend Nate, whom she discovers is married. However, the wording that Paige uses for the spell is changed to effect one person specifically, rather than "those who are in this house," which is one of the original truth spell lines used previously by Prue.
  • In this episode, Jason bought a Chinese-American Dictionary for Phoebe to get around Hong Kong, but he forgot that Hong Kong resident seldom speak Chinese(mandarin), they speak Cantonese. Phoebe tried to pronounce 'excuse me' in Chinese as 'Twim-gee' which is suppose to be mandarin - 对不起 (dui bu qi). And she also pronounce 'bak' for white, which is actually sounds more like Cantonese than mandarin- 白(bai).
  • The number of marriages Grams has had over the years seems to vary from episode to episode. In this episode Grams confirms Leo's statement that she was married four times previously.
  • When Wyatt has his Wiccaning, it's the first (unofficial) appearance by twins, Jason and Kristopher Simmons. They would take over the role of Wyatt, at the beginning of season 6, but not be officially credited with the role until halfway through season 8.
