NCAA Football '06, known colloquially as "College Football 2006", or "NC-Double A 2K6" is a collegiate American football video game which was released on July 11, 2005. The product features former Michigan Wolverines standout and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard on the cover.

In what could arguably be the best game in the relatively brief history of this EA Sports series, NCAA Football 06 features a new game mode, Race for the Heisman. In Race for the Heisman, you begin as a high school standout hoping to sign with a major college program. After choosing your position and your position-specific drill, you are offered three scholarships, or you can walk on to a school of your choice. The prestige of the offering schools depends on how you performed in your drill.

Another new feature in NCAA Football 06 is the Impact Player. Each team has three impact players, usually the three highest rated players on the roster, but there is always at least one impact player on offense and on defense. Some teams' kickers or punters are impact players, too. Offensive linemen are never impact players in the game. Impact players are called upon to make big plays when "in the zone" (indicated by their white impact icon underneath them pulsating). If they execute a big play, action pauses and the camera zooms in on the tackle, juke move, etc., somewhat like the movie The Matrix.

Still around from last year's version are the Top 25 toughest places to play (The University of Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, or "The Swamp", remains #1 in 06), a still-revamped Dynasty Mode (with a new In-Season Recruiting feature), all-time and historic teams, Create-a-School, and much more.

The music features mainly punk and post-punk selections, including Bad Religion, The Clash, NOFX and The Mr. T Experience.

It is the first NCAA game to feature the option of non-fight songs in the menus. The main menu screen features a highlight reel with footage of plays made by some of the most famous players in college football history, including Bo Jackson, Archie Griffin, Charles Woodson, Herschel Walker, LaDainian Tomlinson, Barry Sanders, LaVar Arrington, Warren Sapp, Tim Dwight, Ron Dayne, Warrick Dunn, Lawrence Phillips, Lawrence Taylor, and Peyton Manning.

Like this year's Madden game, which has an exclusive license with the NFL, EA has an exclusive license with the NCAA to use stadiums, logos, and team nicknames.

[edit] Trivia and Interesting Things

  • Troy, Temple, and Miami U (Redhawks) all play generic fight songs on the created team menu, but Troy, and Miami U have their real fight songs in 2005, but Temple is still generic.
  • It is commonly mistaken that current University of Michigan safety Ryan Mundy is on the cover because he wears the number 21 for Michigan.
  • Sometimes in "Race For The Heisman" mode, if the player views the Heisman watch on the very first week, sometimes Michigan QB #7(Chad Henne) or Iowa QB #5(Drew Tate) will be number 5 on the rankings instead of Florida QB# 12(Chris Leak).
  • The University of Florida's playbook is made up of shot-gun plays.
  • If the player views the Notre Dame playbook, the plays are remarkably similar to the New England Patriots plays in Madden NFL.
  • In Race For the Heisman mode, your player starts as a true freshman and is put on the roster as the starting player regardless of the original starter's eligibility.
  • When announcer Lee Corso announces his pick he will wear a mascot head or helmet and Brad Nessler will say something like “it looks good on you” or “mascot heads, helmets, where do you get this stuff?”
  • Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso will make references to their playing days during broadcasts.
  • After a touchdown, the player can celebrate in the end zone but underclassmen will be penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. If the player is a senior he will not be penalized.
  • Athlon Sports Magazine appears in the game along with Sports Illustrated.
  • If the player gives a recognizable name to a player, it will be heard during commentary.
  • The players on the Heisman Watch Screen are Reggie Bush, Gerald Riggs Jr., Chris Leak, Matt Leinart, and Drew Tate and Ted Ginn.
  • Sometimes Drew Tate will replace Ted Ginn Jr. as the final Heisman favorite.
  • In the player’s dorm room, there is some evidence the player has a roommate with an extra bed and another closet but he is never shown.
  • At the end zone of some stadiums, there is an EA Sports Flag and an advertisement sponsoring MVP Baseball 2005.
  • If a school, for example Florida State, does not have a mascot, every time a team scores a touchdown a cannon is fired. The cannon shot is also used for schools who traditionally fire a cannon after a score (such as The University of Texas and The University of Arkansas, among others).
  • The game allows the player to create signs that are shown in the audience.
  • The kicker and punter will do a little dance after a field goal if you press the celebration button.
  • If the player chooses the "Picture" feature in the dorm room, there will be a picture of the player's "girlfriend", as his stats and fame increase the picture will change.
  • The dorm room has art with basketball and football players in the player’s dorm.
  • On the All-Time Texas team 1998 Texas HB has short hair and the 1978 Texas HB(Earl Campbell) has dreadlocks, this is a mistake because Ricky Williams (1998 Texas HB 34) wore them when he was with the Longhorns.
  • Since the NCAA has rules that forbid the use of the players' real names in the game, this game is one of the first NCAA games by EA Sports that has an "Auto-Name Roster" feature that gives a first and last name from a name bank to all the players.
  • On the 1990 Georgia Tech team the quarter back was Shawn Jones. He was #10 and black, not white and #8.
  • If you play a game with the console date set on January 1st, Brad Nessler will say Happy New Year and the fan signs will say "Happy New Year" or "I stayed up all night making this."
