Naulila

Naulila is a town in Cunene Province in southern Angola, it is located on the Cunene River which separates Angola and Namibia.
Naulila was the scene of fighting between Portuguese Angola and German Southwest Africa during the early stages of World War I. On October 19, 1914, a peaceful German delegation is fired upon and murdered by Portuguese soldiers at Fort Naulila, Angola. On October 31, the Germans under the command of Oswald Ostermann retaliate, and raid the Portuguese fort at Cuangar; destroying the fort and killing most of the inhabitants. This is later referred to as the "Cuangar Massacre". On December 18-19, Victor Franke leads a successful retaliatory attack, defeating the Portuguese at Naulila.
Today, in the town of Outjo, Namibia is a monument, and a cemetery commemorating German losses regarding the incidents at Naulila in 1914.
