Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne til Ulven i Manden (Madrigal of the Night - Eight Hymnes to the Wolf in Man) is the third album by Norwegian black metal band Ulver. It is a concept album about a man who, through the efforts of Satan, succumbs to lycanthropy and the beast within. The album showcases a very lo-fi, raw brand of black metal mixed with touches of folk music (admittedly, very few folk passages are present). It is widely regarded as a very listener-unfriendly record, even by the standards of black metal, though, according to many critics, is a masterpiece of black metal.
[edit] Rumors
There are a few rumors surrounding this album.
It is said that Ulver received a large advance from Century Media for the recording of Nattens Madrigal but then proceeded to record it with cheap equipment, spending the money on a Corvette and some Boss suits.
It is also said that the recording was made in the middle of the woods, but Kristoffer Rygg has denied this claim.
A third rumor is a mix of the two previous: Ulver got all the money and they were supposed to record in the woods. But then they bought those expensive things and recorded with lo-fi equipment, enraging Century Media.
