National Youth Council of Singapore

The National Youth Council of Singapore (Malay : Majlis Belia Kebangsaan Singapura) otherwise known as the National Youth Council (NYC) is a division of the People's Association. It was set up by the Singapore Government on 1 November 1989 as the national co-ordinating body for youth affairs in Singapore which aims to develop a vibrant, highly-connected and self-sustaining youth sector to nurture the youth to be ready for the world. The Council currently consists of members representing the various Singaporean government ministries, youth organisations, academic instituitions, voluntary welfare organisations, media and private sector organisations.

[edit] Programmes Organised

In August 2004, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called upon all young Singaporeans to step forward and make a difference to themselves, to the citizens and to Singapore. Since then, a range of activities have been started by the council to engage the youth.

[edit] Youth Leaders and Mentors Programme

The Youth Leaders and Mentors Programme (YLMP) is a Community Leadership programme for developing youth leaders and mentors. It also serves to enhance the level of community involvement and ownership between the youth community. Aimed at secondary school students, participants go through a leadership training course followed by implementing of community projects, guided by mentors who are either students studying in the tertiary level or young working adults.

[edit] Young ChangeMakers

Targeted at people from the age of 13 to 35, the Young ChangeMakers (YCM) scheme is programme that provides individuals or informal youth groups with funding of up to 80% of project cost, or $3,000, whichever is lower, to implement a short-term projects benefiting to their local community.

[edit] National Youth Forum

The National Youth Forum (NYF) was established under the vision of NYC in 2004 to address the call by the Prime Minister to enhance the level of youth civic participation. Arising from the recommendations of the chance to give young people a greater say, the NYF was conceived to equip the youth with a better understanding of the policy-making processes in Singapore.

Scape is a two-hectare community area built especially for the Singaporean youth. A space built by the youth themselves, it is a place for them to express themselves and get involved with the community.

Targeted at today's vibrant youth ranging from 15 to 35 years old, SHINE offers many opportunities for the youth from all walks of life. The festival showcases talent among the youth, develops interests and celebrates youth's caring hearts for Singapore's evergrowing society and communities.
