The Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (National University of Cuyo, UNCuyo) is the largest center of higher education in the province of Mendoza, Argentina.

It was established in 1939 in order to fulfill the educational needs not only of Mendoza, but also of the provinces of San Juan and San Luis. However, in 1973 San Juan and San Luis created their own National Universities, leaving the National University of Cuyo exclusively for the province of Mendoza and for the Balseiro Institute.

As of 2005, the university has 12 academic units in the city of Mendoza and a delegation in the city of San Rafael (province of Mendoza), in addition to the Balseiro Institute which is located in the city of San Carlos de Bariloche (province of Río Negro). It also includes the University Technological Institute which offers technical education in 4 cities in the province of Mendoza.

[edit] History

The UNCuyo was established on March 21, 1939 by the presidential decree 20971. This university was established to offer educative services in the region of Cuyo, which includes the provinces of Mendoza, San Juan and San Luis. In its beginning it comprised some already existing educative centers and also new ones were established. That regional connection -with Human Sciences, Medicine, Agronomy and Economics in Mendoza; Engineering and Architecture in San Juan and Basic Sciences in San Luis remained until 1973 . That year the National University of San Juan and the National University of San Luis were established on the basis of the existent Schools and Faculties. The National University of Cuyo concentrated its educational centers in Mendoza, in addition to the Balseiro Institute in Río Negro Province.
