The Universidad Nacional de Colombia (National University of Colombia) is a public educational institution. Several campuses across the country conform to the university - the main campus is located in Bogotá; there are other campuses in Medellín, Manizales, Palmira, Arauca, Leticia, and San Andrés.

The main campus was designed by German architect Leopold Rother.

This University has a wide selection of programmes, such as medicine, nursery, dentistry, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, physics, social sciences, arts (music, fine arts) philosophy and law. It plans to become a real research institution; it is already the main educational institution of Colombia, in terms of size and geographic reach. This institution yields the greatest number of granted professional degrees per year in the country. Many alumni have done outstanding contributions in science, arts, economy, politics etc. Among others Fernando Botero, Manuel Elkin Patarroyo, Totó la Momposina, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez studied there.

The University is also known for the continuing appealing of some of its students to left wing politics. Buildings in the campus are a common place for left wing slogans. There is a big painting of Che Guevara in the facade of the University's main auditorium (called "Leon de Greiff"). The square by the auditorium is commonly known as Plaza Che (Che Square), but its official name is Plaza Francisco de Paula Santander (Francisco de Paula Santander Square).

The Universidad Nacional has its own stadium, the "Alfonso López Pumarejo" where sometimes national championship's games Colombian Professional Soccer are held. The university has a radio station, 98.5 FM (UNRADIO) in Bogotá.

[edit] Protest

The university is a recruitment hub for several left-wing organizations, like the Colombian Communist Party as was reported by the national media,[1] however the Communist Party dismissed this critics despite the evidence presented by the media. [2] Urban branches of the Colombian illegal armed groups (mostly FARC and AUC) have been in the campus for several years, recruiting young students.[3] The students usually carry protest and riots against the local and national government while being controlled by the ESMAD, the anti riot branch of the Colombian National Police. The most violent incident between the police forces and the students result in the death in 2001 of police officer Mauricio Soto by decapitation after a home-made explosive device called papa bomba (potato bomb) hit the officer in the neck, where the kevlar helmet doesn´t provide cover.[4]
