National Secessionist Forces

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NSF is short for National Secessionist Forces, a fictional revolutionary group within the world of the computer game Deus Ex.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

They reside mainly in the United States of America although they receive help from Silhouette, a supposed terrorist group in France, the Luminous Path Triads of Hong Kong , X-51 as well as other terrorist groups across the world. The NSF are regarded as terrorists by UNATCO as they are known for raiding Ambrosia-shipments (a cure for the "Gray death" plague present in the game) and numerous other acts. Their motive is to decentralise the U.S. government and give the ordinary people of the U.S. as good a chance to survive the plague as the rich and "important" people. NSF members can be identified by their gray metal body armour, tan coloured pants and an orange visor over their eyes.

[edit] History of the NSF

In 2030 a major earthquake hit the West Coast, destroying most of San Francisco and dumping all of Los Angeles and most of Southern California south of Lompoc into the ocean. With the government focusing on the disaster on the ex-West Coast, the needs of the other parts of the country went unmet. In 2031 Utah announced its intention to secede from the United States, declaring its independence and annexing what was left of Arizona and Nevada. Inspired by Utah's example, fringe groups in Texas declared independence as well. Shortly after various paramilitary groups in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming formed the Northwest Secessionist Forces (NSF). All of these attempts to secede failed, though martial law continues to exist in some portions of these states.

However in these states anger towards the federal government remained. In 2042 new gun control legislation, the Sporting Weapons Act, was passed and the NSF appeared once again. The new NSF (now National Secessionist Forces) was formed by gun toting individuals who refused to give up their rifles, grenades, land mines, and other "collectibles" besed mainly in the West. Lead by Leon Woods, they intended the "liberation" of Washington, Montana, Oregon, and Northern California. The movement spread eastwards eventually having a large support base in major eastern urban centres such as New York. Many people saw the NSF as liberators from an increasingly authoritarian MJ-12 controlled U.S. central government. Leon Woods died at his infamous last stand in 2045 at the Siege of Squalnomie (a presumed spoonerism of the town of Snoqualmie in Washington state), but the NSF continued on gaining more and more strength and support from foreign groups such as SCHUSE snd Silhouette . At this point the U.N. declared war on the NSF

Jason Findley, Gray Haddock and Christina Leicht were the governors of Colorado, Texas and California respectively. They refused to comply with President Mead's declaration of martial law across the U.S. or acknowledge the authority of Walton Simons, Director of FEMA. Findley, Haddock and Leicht are governors of areas where there is much NSF activity so it is unknown that if they were removed by Walton Simons that they did not lose control of their states but merely gained control of the NSF and the US Army and United States National Guard who were probably in full mutiny against UNATCO and MJ-12 with the removal of General Ed Garner by Walton Simons and resignation of Secretary of Defence N.D Goper in protest.

[edit] Current Status

In 2052 their objective was to defeat the over-centralized U.S. government and possibly de-centralize the country. The also want poor people to have access to the Ambrosia vaccine against the Gray Death. This has made them popular with the lower classes. They are believed to receive financing from Tracer Tong and the Triads, the Chinese government and also possibly through the Illuminatus Stanton Dowd. Dissident computer scientists based in Seattle and San Francisco and possibly X-51 have also helped them set up a highly advanced encrypted communications system which UNATCO has had minimal success in cracking giving the NSF an edge. Also NSF recruits are often given full military training at militia camps, making NSF troops tactically equal to their US Army and UNATCO counterparts. The state of Texas which unsuccessfully tried to seceede in 2032 is described in an email as being in a state of constant warfare between the NSF and UNATCO and the U.S. military.

Despite their good intentions the NSF remained a terrorist group. They would arm anyone willing to fight for their cause and they committed many acts of terror, such as hostage taking. This not only made them unpopular with a few lower class people it has also gave the government some prime material to construct anti-NSF propaganda with.

After the events of Deus Ex, most of the organization seems to be crippled but not destroyed. This is partly due to the actions of the player, whose short tenure with UNATCO saw the capture of several important bases - including the NSF New York headquarters; capture or death of several commanders, including a prominent supporter, Juan Lebedev (although it is possible to let him be captured alive rather than killed), and the failure of a critical operation.

However the organisation remains largely intact - though with a reduced strength in the East Coast. This is probably due to the sending of the NSF distress signal by JC at the New York headquarters in Hell's Kitchen which allowed other NSF bases and terrorist groups in Europe to take necessary counter measures. Several prominent members from the New York Section remain at large, probably waiting to reform the organisation in New York. During the game the NSF are conducting operations in Paris under the command of Chad Dumier, leader of Silhouette and the Illuminatus Morgan Everett. Morgan Everett ,in conversation with JC, mentions their still operational HQ; a hundred miles north of the X-51 base at Vandenburg. In Paris JC Denton overhears a man asking his wife to come with him to America as he has been contracted to work with the NSF.
