National Park Poloniny

The National Park Poloniny (Slovak: Národný park Poloniny) is a national park in northeastern Slovakia near the Polish and Ukrainian borders, in the Poloniny mountains and Bukovské vrchy. It was created on 1st October 1997 with protected area of 298.05 km² and protected zone of 109.73 km². The park is entirely in the Snina District. It is adjacent to the Bieszczady National Park in Poland, together they are part of the UNESCO East Carpathian Biosphere Preserve which has a total area of 2.132,11 km². The Preserve consists of three parts:
- 1. Polish (Bieszczady National Park and the two Landscape Parks that surround it - Wetlinski and the San Valley)
- 2. Slovak (National Park Poloniny with adjacent areas)
- 3. Ukranian (Uzansky National Park and the San-area Landscape Park).
The closest town with rail and bus connections is Snina in the furthest north-east corner of the country, population about 21,000.
